Support Literacy through the Murch Auction

In conjunction with the Murch Book Drive, and as a community-service effort through theSpring Auction, the Murch HSA is partnering with the DC-based, grassroots nonprofit Reach Incorporated to raise money to purchase books for DC children in need and promote literacy programs. Every $10 you donate buys at least one book and every $20 buys an hour of tutor training. You can help us reach our goal of 400 new books for kids who need them one of three ways:

Reach's mission is to foster the love of literacy while improving the literacy levels of DC public school students. Reach was formed in 2009 out of concern that 87% of DC school children do not read at grade level when they enter high school. Research reveals that students with low literacy skills are 20 times more likely to drop out of school than their highest performing peers. “Training Kids to Teach Kids,” Reach hires and trains high school students to tutor elementary school students. The program is offered in public schools in Wards 5 and 6, where teachers guide Reach tutors in preparing lesson plans grounded in the core components of literacy development. In turn, the high school tutors provide twice-weekly reading instruction to elementary school students in need of support.

Please take this opportunity to contribute to Reach’s efforts to improve literacy among DC students!

How You Can Help

>> Download the Auction Donation Form. Thank you!

  • Create a Family Basket: Looking for an easy -- yet high-impact -- way to support the Auction this year? Donating a family basket requires a small investment plus a little creativity, but can reap big returns for the school!  >>Learn more.
  • Donate an item: Quality “new-in-the-box” housewares, sports equipment, or toys; a week at your vacation home; tickets to a sports or cultural event; etc.
  • Offer your expertise: Turn your special skill into a gift certificate for services: Babysitting; cooking; landscaping; knitting; photography; speechwriting; etc.
  • Throw a small party: Team up with another parent to offer a dinner party, cake-of-the-month, Saturday bagel delivery, or other special service or event.
  • Talk to Murch alums about making a donation and attend the event.
  • Ask a favorite business that you patronize to make a donation or buy an ad in the auction catalog.
  • Buy a commemorative ad in the catalog in honor of your child or a teacher. This is a great way for special friends and grandparents to support Murch.
  • Become a sponsor of the auction. If you just want to support the auction without a lot of fuss, please consider making a tax deductible gift.
  • Attend the event, have fun, and come home with some fabulous items!
  • Be creative! All donations are tax-deductible.

Read kids' reviews of standout items from last year's auction.

Join the Auction Team!

This event depends on an extensive team of parent volunteers to do jobs big and small: serve as category chairpersons, solicit donations, coordinate class art project-gifts, sell ads for the auction catalog, tend bar, collect tickets, decorate the party space, and so on.
