2009-10 Student Council

Highlights

As we head off for summer, here’s a recap of the council’s many accomplishments this school year:
• Sponsored a highly successful turkey drive in November to ensure others would not go without during the Thanksgiving holiday.
• Surveyed the school to determine specific ways to improve the school store, which will back next year, better than ever.
• Joined forces with the Peer Mediators to raise more than $3,000 in the "Help Murch Help Haiti" campaign. (Thank you again to the Murch community for its generosity.)
• Held the Second Annual Student Council Lip Sync concert. Besides being a fun evening, the event raised money for Haiti.

Thank you to the outgoing Student Council officers and classroom representatives for all of their hard work and dedication!

School Story Survey Results

The Student Council met to discuss the recent survey on the school store. To summarize:
  • Most students said they didn’t know where the school store is located.
  • The majority of students are aware that the store sells school supplies.
  • The top three items that students want to see for sale are snacks/drinks, magnets, and water bottles.
  • Many students said they would be more likely to shop at the school store if it were located outside.

Until further notice, the school store will remain closed while renovations and improvements are made.

Upcoming Officer Elections

Lip Sync Logistics

We reviewed last meeting’s minutes, then began discussing the upcoming Lip Sync show. We had many things to work out, such as volunteers, donations, tickets, and advertising. Half of the money we raise will be donated to Help Murch Help Haiti. Finally, we made Lip Sync posters and hung them around the school. We hope to see many of you at the concerts this Thursday and Friday night!

Our next Student Council meeting will take place on Monday, March 22.

Lip Sync Plans and School Store Survey

We began by discussing the Lip Sync Show. Ms. Finberg said the performances will be March 11 and 12, and we need to think about making tickets, designing publicity posters, and helping out with snack sales. Volunteers for the event will need to be at school at 5:30. They will finish at 6 p.m. when the concert begins. The students will be responsible for selling tickets, handing out programs, and showing people to their seats. Those who are interested in working either night should have a permission slip signed and returned to school no later than Monday, March 8.

We also had a conversation about the school store. We may conduct a survey to see how we can improve the store. We might also purchase a new case, because the old one is in bad condition. We are planning to have a poster party to create posters, which will draw attention to the school store.

Supplies and Apparel for Sale

The Student Council is pleased to announce that the school store will be open for business every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-4 p.m. in the gymnasium, beginning Tuesday, January 5. We will be selling a variety of school supplies including pencils, folders, erasers, and markers, in addition to Murch t-shirts and sweatshirts.

School Store to Open Dec. 11

We discussed what to sell at the school store. We also considered selling used books. The grand opening will be Friday, Dec. 11, though the regular days of operation will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 4 p.m.

Next, we talked about possible gifts for the school. Some of our ideas were: energy-efficient light bulbs, pencil sharpeners, books for the library, goals for the soccer field, and fans for the classrooms. After a question session, the meeting was adjourned.

School Store Set to Open

President Allie Schwalb welcomed the Student Council, and our meeting began. I read the minutes from the previous meeting and then we got to work. Sabrina Finberg, Student Council advisor, brought up the subject of the school store, and we voted to see which days it would be open. The final decision was: 3:30-4 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays. The school store is tentatively scheduled to open on Tuesday, December 8.

Then we hung posters in the halls for the Turkey Drive and distributed boxes to the classrooms to be used for the collection of donated food. There will be an assembly on Monday, November 23 when the Northwest Settlement House comes to collect all of the donations.

The next Student Council meeting will be Monday, November 30.

Fall Fair Profits Spur More Fundraising Talk

President Allie Schwalb Allie talked about the success of the Fall Fair, and Treasurer Emily Colleye reported that we’d made a profit of $615.03 from selling Murch T-shirts and sweatshirts at the event.

Vice President Riley Hager discussed the Turkey Drive, which the Student Council is co-sponsoring with We Are Family DC to collect and distribute the Turkey Drive contributions.

More discussion about fundraising occurred—we talked about the school store, and possibly holding hot chocolate or cider stands later this fall.

Reps Discuss PJ Day, Other Issues

President Allie Schwalb welcomed the group. I, the secretary, read the minutes from the last meeting. Allie invited ideas from the officers and representatives. Some of the ideas included:

  • Help homeless animals
  • Suggest that the next horseshoe reward should be Pajama Day
  • Bring back Wacky Wednesday

There was discussion about the school store, and Allie suggested that the Student Council might sign up for shifts to work there. We will vote on hours to be open at the next meeting.

Ms. Finberg, Student Council advisor, passed out slips for volunteering at the Fall Fair, and showed us the new Murch sweatshirts that we will be selling. They are blue with white letters.

We will be doing the annual turkey drive again this year. Look for more information to come.

Finally, we had closing remarks and adjourned.

Officer Elections September 11

Campaign season kicks off next week for Student Council elections. We have a wonderful selection of 4th-and 5th-grade candidates running for President, Vice President, Secretary, Historian, and Treasurer. Keep your eye peeled for posters, stickers, pins and more! The campaigns will conclude on Friday, September 11, with candidates making speeches to the school in an assembly. Voting will follow in individual classrooms for grades 1-5 that afternoon.

The results of the election will be announced on Monday, September 14. That's also when information regarding elections for classroom representatives will be announced. All students in grades 2-5 are eligible to be nominated as a classroom representative.

The Student Council looks forward to a great school year!
