Community Outreach

Murch participates in a variety of programs that strengthen our bond with both the local and global community. We invite students and their families to join in these partnerships, which foster a sense of civic responsibility, deepen our insight and understanding of vital issues, provide hands-on opportunities to help others and learn by doing, and enhance our lives and the lives of others.

Sustainability

One of the most vibrant components of Murch's community outreach is through our many environmental and gardening initiatives, which you can read about in detail on the Green Scene page.

Among the highlights are partnerships with casey-treesCasey Trees to restore the District’s tree canopy, and GROW (Growing Regionally and Organically in Washington), part of the Obama administration's program to promote healthy eating and nutritional education for America’s school children.

Health

jumprope for heartJump Rope for Heart is a great way for your child to get active and make a difference by raising funds for the American Heart Association. The event is usually held in June during Murch Field Day. For more information, see the Athletics page or contact  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Charity

After a massive earthquake devastated Haiti in January 2010, the Student Council and Peer Mediators organized this successful fundraising campaign, Help Murch Help Haiti. All monies raised benefit the nonprofit organization Save the Children, which since 1978 has provided health care, education, and food to Haitian children in need. The students are exploring avenues for establishing a long-term relationship with a school or children's organization in Haiti and other ways to provide support and raise awareness of Haiti’s plight.

Additionally, Murch supports and raises money for various local causes:

  • Shoebox Project: Every holiday season, Murch students fill shoeboxes with toiletries and other small items, and donate the gifts to such local charities as SOME (So Others Might Eat).
  • Turkey Drive: Every November the Student Council collects money and canned goods for We Are Family DC.
  • Walk for the Homeless: Murch students and faculty regularly participate in community mini-walks in support of Fannie Mae’s Help the Homeless Program and annual Walkathon on the National Mall.
