Community-based Activities for Kids
Programs are listed at the discretion of the HSA and as a courtesy to the Murch community. Priority is given to programs that are run by local non-profit organizations and/or which take place on or near school grounds.
Before- and After-care
- Murch Extended Day is a before- and after-school recreation program located at St. Paul's Church across from Murch and has been serving Murch students for 25 years. Join in for daily fun and learning opportunities! For the 2011-2012 school year we have expanded space in our Kindergarden program. Every day we have monitored homework time, sports (rain or shine) and lots of clubs and crafts, all included with monthly tuition. Some examples from the past school year: science, sewing, ceramics, drawing, drama, book club, strategy games. We have a wonderful staff that return year after year and alumni return to us often as well, creating a homey environment. Forms are available at Xday and in the Murch office. - Y.O.U.R. Youth Organizations United to Rise offers children 5 to 13 years old the following programs before and after school: homework assistance; tutoring services (reading & mathematics); environmental educational; cultural awareness; science, mathematics and language arts enrichment; life skills activities; organized sports activities; and field trips.Nutritious snacks offered. After-school Classes & Activities
Art & Music
- Children's Art Studio offers after-school and Saturday-morning art classes, workshops on days when DCPS is closed, and camps during the winter, spring, and summer holidays. The organization is founded on the belief that children reap tremendous emotional, intellectual and developmental benefits from making art. Located at 4723 Wisconsin Avenue NW, the studio is a 501(c)(3) registered in the District of Columbia.
- Fillmore Arts Workshop features various classes after school in music, art, and dance in the Fillmore Arts Center/Hardy Middle School Building on Wisconsin at 36th Street NW.
- Notebusters is a community-based singing group that gives kids a chance to bond with their fellow students over good old American songs from decades past, including rock, pop, and popular musicals. Led by Alex Helsabeck and Shellie Wood, Notebusters brings together Northwest families several times a year for magical evenings of music. Open to Murch students in the 1st through 5th grades. Language
- The Language Program offers language classes in Spanish, French, and Italian; a bilingual Spanish after care program; homework assistance; arts and crafts; music; and outdoor play at Murch. - The Chinese Language Program provides Mandarin language instruction through activities, worksheets, songs, games, and other cultural activities. Emphasis is on spoken language skills, but basic characters related to everyday situations are also introduced, as well as the pin yin system of teaching Chinese to English speakers. Science & Nature
- Hands-On Science: An after-school science-enrichment program for K – 5 students. Past themes have included physics of color and light, anatomy, and gravity. Sessions take place at Murch. Contact HOS coordinator

Enrichment
- Girl Scout Brownies: The Brownies Troop is for first- through third-grade girls. Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at Murch. Contact troop leader

- Jellef Boys and Girls Club is a full service, year-round club for all youth. It has a variety of programs in sports, education, recreation and the arts housed in a facility that includes a gym, game room, Teen Center, computer lab, outdoor pool and field.has after-school programs for students. Sports
- HoopEd After School Basketball at Murch holds one-hour clinics to teach rules and skills. For boys and girls grades K-3. Wednesdays at 3:20 p.m.
- HoopEd After School Sports and Games at Murch. Each week the group plays a different sport or game such as dodge ball, kick ball, soccer, capture the flag, and kick the can. Boys and girls of all skill levels welcome, 2nd - 5th grades. Mondays 3:20-4:20 p.m.
- Lafayette Afterschool Tennis classes are 3:30-4:30 pm Mon-Fri. at the Lafayette Park Tennis Courts for children ages 5-14. Contact:
